What is the Tasmanian Men’s Gathering?

A welcoming space for men to reconnect, reset and grow — in community.

The Tasmanian Men’s Gathering (TMG) is an annual, not-for-profit wellbeing event designed to support men from all walks of life. It’s a long weekend where men come together in a safe, supportive and down-to-earth environment to explore what it means to live well, relate well, and strengthen themselves and their communities.

You don’t need to have experience or have ever attended anything like this before. Many men come along not knowing what to expect — and leave feeling lighter, more grounded and more connected.

Why do men gather?

Life is busy. Responsibilities pile up. Many men spend years powering forward without much time to check in with themselves or with other men.

We have found that a certain magic happens when we extracting ourselves from relationships, families, work, and gathering as equals. A men’s gathering offers an opportunity to step away from daily life:

  • Support and camaraderie with a group of good men

  • Practical tools for wellbeing, emotional fitness and healthy relationships

  • A chance to reconnect with nature, with yourself, and with what matters most

You don’t need to “fix” anything to attend — the Gathering isn’t therapy. It’s about community, challenge, fun, and real conversations.

What happens at the Gathering?

Across the long weekend, men take part in a mix of activities such as:

  • Group workshops

  • Movement and outdoor experiences

  • Storytelling and shared discussions

  • Creative expression

  • Quiet reflection time

  • Evening fireside spaces

  • Community meals

  • And a few surprises that change each year!

Everything is designed to be inclusive, optional and accessible. All activities are by invitation.

Is it religious, political, or confrontational?

No.
The Tasmanian Men’s Gathering is non-religious, non-political, and non-judgmental.

All men are welcome regardless of religious belief, nationality, sexual orientation or gender at birth. The gathering practices values including confidentiality, respect and authenticity. There are no tests or initiation ceremonies. It’s run by experienced volunteers from TasMen, a small Tasmanian nonprofit dedicated to improving men’s wellbeing. The Gathering is grounded in respect, confidentiality and honesty. TasMen brings men together to promote the idea of men supporting men.

Who attends?

Men aged 18 to 80+ have attended — tradies, teachers, dads, retirees, students, professionals, farmers, artists… men who are thriving, men who are struggling, and men who are simply curious.

The only requirement is a willingness to show up as who you are, and be part of a supportive community.

A long-running Tasmanian tradition

TMG has been running for nearly three decades. Each year has its own theme and flavour, but the heart of it remains the same:
connection, challenge, fun, and men supporting men.

Testimonials

  • What men say:

“I didn’t know how much I needed this.”

“I feel like I can breathe again.”

“This was the reset I didn’t know I was looking for.”

    “Real conversations with real blokes.”

“I’m taking home tools I’ll actually use.”

  • “For most of my life, I’d been afraid of men and had hidden my feelings from them. Indeed, I’d repressed my feelings altogether, afraid to admit that I’d even had any! It’s very different now… I’ve not only come to feel love for myself, but also to love and to trust expressing the feelings that I do have.

It has been the single most enriching experience of my life”

    David

  • “It was the openness and the love that I received that I did not know was possible from strangers ….. who became mates …….who became friends”

    Anthony

  • “When I first came to a Tasmanian Men’s Gathering I felt this deep sense of ‘me again’. A release from all the roles I play as farmer, husband, father.

I found a space I could connect with my spirit and the spirit of man.

To reflect, to laugh, to cry. To just be me”

    Chuck

  • “This is profound work. I recognise the huge loving commitment of key organisers and I am grateful beyond words for this opportunity for men to be real, thoughtful, caring, open, and loving together in a wider culture that seems to do all that it can to create wooden, closed, macho-mindless males when there’s such magnificence in each of us. Eternal thanks!”

  • “There had been some trauma in my life and I wasn’t seeing the world in a particularly good way. At my first gathering, I wasn’t sure what was happening but I was feeling really high and grounded... Being in this group of men opened up ways of feeling and dealing with the world that I hadn’t experienced before. There was a crack in my reality that revealed hope about the future”

    Rhys
