OM:NI

OM:NI MEN’S GROUP.

YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS.....Right?”

Maybe true.....but older folks can come up with bright new ideas!

This is how we were born, with a name borrowed from Sydney,

OM:NI Older Men: New Ideas.

For well over 20 years, we have been meeting as a small group of older men, mostly now over 70 and some over 80, but generally anyone over 60.

Every other Tuesday (even through COVid19 via ZOOM), from 10.00am to noon, we chat about anything that moves us, niggles us, giggles us, lifts us, brings back memories (sweet or sour); in fact anything that gives us connection with each other and promotes zest for living.

We currently meet at the Bahai Centre of Learning, close to ABC in Hobart.

It's all very informal, certainly not hierarchical, no minutes are kept, warm, friendly.

Above all, we observe these important protocols:

Confidentiality – What is said in the room stays in the room

Respectful – of each man's age, physical abilities, special needs, etc.

Trusting – willing to share one's story on a deeper level if there's a desire to

Speaking from the heart, the “I” statement instead of generalising about others

Sensitivity for a man's background and the life he has led

We also embrace the idea that, as men who have lived experience over many years and learned to overcome innumerable difficulties, then we might be able to offer encouragement and moral support to younger people in their life's journey.

We have room for a few more men to join us.
